Search For Homes With Basements in Charlottesville

by Jim Duncan on January 2, 2009

At the request of a reader using my “search for homes” tool – now you can search (and save your searches for delivery via email or RSS) for homes with basements … a simple but very useful addition. Also … you can now search for garages – a simple fix, but a testament to the simple things needed to make searching for homes more efficient.

Please let me know if there are other tweaks you would like to see.

Thanks for adding the garage search feature!

I noticed a small bug when using the “year built” feature: since the range is so wide, the slider tools aren’t usable. Year built goes from 0 to present. Maybe it should go ~1700 to present? Would that exclude listings missing year built data? I wonder what the oldest home in the area is? (for some context Monticello=1772)

Hmmm … great question about whether some would be excluded. I was going to change the default “minimum age” to 1750, but did a quick search of homes in the MLS – 69 in the Central Virginia came back as older than 1750 … 9 had actual “year built” as prior to 1750, the rest indicated the year built was zero.

It’s a flaw with the system and the Realtors.

For now, I’m going to leave it at zero (I can shift it myself in the back end), but don’t want to risk eliminating any properties. What do you think?

Wow, it would be fabulous to include a feature for “first floor bedroom”. This is something only Realtors can search on in mycaar. Thanks for your consideration.

That sounds fine for now. Hopefully the Realtor system programmers can figure out a solution for the “year built” problem!
