You might have seen the occasional Zipcar in Charlottesville – usually they’re from the DC Metropolitan area. But now it seems that Charlottesville has their own Zipcars – 6 of ‘em in fact.
It was good of UVA to have sorted out a deal with Zipcar; the Daily Progress article says the minimum age to rent is 18 and Zipcar’s site says it’s 21.
Thanks to the Daily Progress for the heads-up.
Funny; I had hoped for Zipcars in 2005 when I read this Cavalier Daily article<:
Representatives from Zipcar, a rental car service, and officials from the University’s Department of Parking and Transportation currently are communicating on a plan to bring Zipcar to the University.
Lamentably, being a Realtor in Charlottesville does not (yet) allow itself for a Zipcar + bicycle only existence.
But … if you combine a Zipcar + a bicycle + a home in Charlottesville with a relatively high Walkscore …
You might just be onto something.

Jim, this is fantastic news. As serendipity would have it, I am going to be working temporarily in DC starting a week after the Zipcars arrive in C-ville. I have a ride up Monday morning, and I was planning to take the train home Fridays. A Zipcar will be faster and cheaper way home than the train.
About every 2-3 weeks, being a one-car family is an inconvenience. I eagerly await the Zipcars’ arrival!
A friend of mine never discontinued her Zipcar membership after moving here over a year ago, in hopes that this day would come …
Saw two parking spots in front of Gooch/Dillard dorm on Alderman Rd with “Zipcar parking only” signs. Exciting!
