Citing sources in blogs

This morning I was politely reminded of the need to accurately cite my sources when quoting from other articles. I  always cite site, but do not always cite the author and date.  I did  a lot of writing and citing in college, using the standard MLA style; unfortunately, I have not found a comparable standard with regards to blogs that is also quick to implement.

After some googling, I found this discussion (this one too)that covers much of what I was looking for. If I had $17.50, I would purchase the Columbia Guide to Online Style as the MLA seems to be a bit archaic, but that is my opinion.

From now on, I will (try my very best) to cite the site and author. I think that the link to the article itself should be sufficient for citing the date of publication, but understand the other side of the argument. This medium is evolving, and I am going to do my part to ensure that is maintains its credibility. Blogs move quickly by nature. Hopefully this way of citing will be sufficient.

Update: Duane Gran and I were thinking the same thing this morning, but he is more technically articulate.

    Jim,

How ironic that we were writing about such similar topics this morning. I personally try to reference worthwhile links and use my best recollection of MLA style for citations that warrant it. I’m drafting another write up about some implications of citation in digital media. When I post it I’ll be sure to share it with you.
