Soccer and real estate

It’s all about relationships – at least locally. I play in a local adult soccer league, and coach my daughter’s team as well. After playing in the league for the past five or six years, many of the faces are familiar, personalities are known and mutual respect has been earned. When we play on Sundays, there is a camaraderie that supersedes an individuals’ desire to prove himself, much as it should be in the real estate arena.

Stepping onto the pitch is much like entering into a transaction. A great deal of effort by many different parties has been exerted up to that point besides simply showing a house.

Make no mistake, on the pitch there is serious, not-quite-fierce competition, but every player wants to win. Just as in the real estate community, I know who is a good player, who is fair and who is dirty – knowing and recognizing those differences makes for a better player and match – and I play accordingly.

To make matters a bit more palatable (not least to my wife) I have sold a couple of houses to fellow players. Win-win situations are achievable (good exercise and good competition), especially when one knows the competition.

Similarities between soccer and real estate:

1) Preparation and training are key.
2) Knowing the competition’s strengths and weaknesses is crucial.
3) There are clear boundaries that are crossed frequently by some.
4) Both require passion and dedication to be successful.
5) Played well, both can be a lot of fun; played haphazardly and people are liable to get hurt.

Love the analogy and I couldn’t agree with you more. Knowing the other “players” in this industry is key! We find that this particularly makes a big difference in multiple offer deals. we have been involved with several where our client has either got the property, or has chosen a specific buyer because of who was reprensenting them. The credibility of the agent is definitely reflected on the client.
