Goodbye George

George Herring was a man who could do it all – roofing, ripping out drywall, installing skylights, building and tearing down decks, install siding, take it off – haul it all away and stand by his work. Every Realtor needs George.

He was “the guy” – when clients would turn to me (as they frequently do) seeking “someone to do that thing” – I would usually turn to George. I described him as seemingly immortal – leather skin, smoked like a chimney, skinny as a rail, yet able to do what most men today don’t seem willing or able to do.

George passed away Friday. I’ll miss him. I’ll miss him asking me how my mom’s doing. I’ll miss him asking me when I or my mom is going to send him some work; he’s “been eating nothing but peanut butter and jelly sandwiches since the last time we talked!”). I’ll miss him always driving a truck, three-to-a-seat, ready, willing and able to do whatever I or my clients needed.

They don’t make Georges anymore, and the world is a little bit sadder for it.

    Jim,
Just wanted to thank you for your informative session today at the NYSAR meetings, I truly appreciated what you tried to impart. Read your column, it was what I expected it to be. I know a “George” right in my own community, without them we would be at a tremendous loss. I hope I can establish a site as warm and informative as the one you have created.
    Thank you again.
