Nature, Children, Play and Neighborhoods

I learned a tremendous amount from listening to the discussion on Sunday’s Wake-Up Call on WNRN as Kate and Rick discussed nature, interacting with nature, play, roaming, neighborhoods … this post will be expanded with show notes when I make time to listen to it again, but here is my question –

Particularly if you live in the Charlottesville area, which areas or neighborhoods do you perceive to be best located, designed or implemented to take advantage of nature?

I mentioned Belvedere, Farm Colony and Bundoran Farm, (Bundoran Farm) but surely there are others that are close to parks, rivers, hiking trails? (hint: I know most of these areas but am curious for your perspective)

Peacock Hill and Dunlora come to my mind.

We live very close to the Rivanna Trail in the Greenbrier Neighborhood of Charlottesville — though it’s a bit of a distance to walk to shops and restaurants (despite that I’ve done it numerous times over the years – both to Barracks Rd and to the Downtown Mall ), the area is surrounded by beautiful old trees. The elementary school is within walking distance for most everyone in the neighborhood. People are always out walking and jogging at all times of day.

From a commenter via the nifty “contact me” widget on the right:

“Jim: Just putting a plug in for Fontana which surprisingly has many of the features you have been highlighting on your blog; In fact the county has a priority plan that will soon make walking down to the Pantops shopping a reality with a signalled cross walk across 250 at Rolkin Rd. You may not know that a long awaited walking trail system within the community is just finishing up; Darden Towe is a wonderful park just to walk around and a ton of recreation. If you can find a house with decent grading of driveway, Fontana is a great place.”
