Bicycle Safety Discussion Next Week

At City Space.

To continue the momentum created by the Citizen’s Bike Safety Committee established by the City this year, the City of Charlottesville, in partnership with Bike Charlottesville, will hold a community discussion on Wednesday, October 20th beginning at 7pm at CitySpace in the Market Street Parking Garage downtown.

I’d also like to see discussions about bike helmets, like this one at the WSJ.

Wouldn’t it be nice if the County of Albemarle and the University of Virginia participated in the conversation as well?

I do particularly like this helmet, though.

Considering the polarized nature of politics, it’s no wonder the President can’t win.

Wearing a helmet is important. It’s too easy to smack your mellon on the blacktop (or oak tree, if you’re in the woods).

Though, Germans, which have a massive bike culture, overwhelmingly wear no helmets. Must be due to their beer goggles?

I see the need to wear a helmet in the woods more than I do for every-day riding around the City. Looking at the recent accidents in the news, I don’t (I’m no expert) think that helmets would have helped.

I was stopped on the street once by a TV news reporter and asked if I thought wearing my bike helmet made me safer. Apparently, a study had just come out claiming that wearing a helmet increased your odds of getting hit by a car – that motorists are more careful with cyclists who are not wearing a helmet than with those that are. I said something boring, like that I’d have to read the study, and probably didn’t make the evening news cut. I did read the study, and other ones but I haven’t come to any conclusions.

I still wear a helmet out of habit, and because my wife thinks I’m safer with it on.

The wife thing is the main reason I wear mine, too. 🙂
