Visit a Wegmans before Buying a House in Charlottesville

Just a suggestion – if you’re considering buying a house in the Charlottesville area in the next 18 months, visit a Wegmans first.

Apparently Wegmans is the best thing since sliced bread, and I’ve found that one of the primary triangles in my clients’ lives (work, home, grocery …) tends to be Harris Teeter, Krogers, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s.

But it has also raised questions, particularly from those unfamiliar with the brand and its allure. What is the deal with Wegmans? Why do people who know it seem to love it so? And is it really this grocery oasis in what increasingly feels like a desert of mediocre or at least interchangeable supermarket options?

Vist Wegmans first. I’ve been in the Wegmans in Gainesville once; it’s a grocery store.

Don’t worry, you have time. The Charlottesville Wegmans isn’t going to open until Fall of 2017.

Yay. A clock tower.

Wegaman’s are the closest grocery stores to the two hotels where I stay when I am in Northern Virginia for a few weeks each year. At first, I told myself it was awesome and cool to shop at them because everyone raves about Wegman’s. But now that I’ve been shopping there for a few years, I can honestly say I find shopping there unpleasant.

Wegman’s stores are dark (all brown), crowded, and huge. There is no “quick stop” at a Wegman’s. If you go to one in Northern Virginia, you’re in for 45-60 minutes, even if you are only getting 10 items. It’s true that the staff is lovely and the cafe side is impressive.

I’m kind of glad we didn’t wind up in the part of town where the Wegman’s is being built. 🙂

I too am glad y’all ended up where you are. 🙂

It sounds like Wegmans is an “experience” more than “shopping for food” … I’m a fan of getting in and out as efficiently as I can. I can’t see myself spending leisure time at a Wegmans.
