UVa. tearing down the Cavalier Inn

I was remarking to a prospective buyer, who happens to be staying at the Cavalier Inn, how it was going to be torn down in the near future to make way for UVa’s Arts Center. Lo and behold, Cvillenews has a discussion on that very subject. From the Cavalier Daily – While actual plans for the new arts center have yet to be designed, the University is anticipating that the center will be approximately 120,000 square feet with a performance space capable of accommodating an audience of 1,600, Wornock said. The new arts center will be located on the current site of the University-owned Cavalier Inn on the corner of Emmett Street and University Avenue.

WINA and the DP both have fairly extensive reports – of note is that the federal regulatory agencies told Rivanna that they don’t HAVE to come up with a plan that covers the next 50 years. Wish they had mentioned that 5 years ago. Planning for the distant future is not an altogether bad idea, though. Not planning adequately for the future is something that has defined our region for some time. Shockingly, the local officials say they want to meet again with regulators before selecting a preferred option or combination of options.

Let’s go to Culpeper!

The Commonwealth Transportation Board will hold a public hearing involving its draft 6-year plan for rail, mass transit, bicycle, pedestrian, and state highway projects. The agency wants to hear about projects through the 2011 budget cycle. The public hearing will be held at 5 p.m. at the Highway Department’s Culpeper District auditorium…. Planning for only six years seems shortsighted.
