New commuter rail service?

Some local residents want to make it easier to get to Washington by train. They hope to see the Virginia Railway Express, or VRE, extend its service to Charlottesville. From WINA, and the DP has a story as well.
Not a bad idea, particularly in light of the fact that Amtrak service may be stopping.
I think that in general, more efficient, non-auto transportation is a good thing. But how would our market be affected if more Northern Va and DC residents moved here to commute to DC?

From what I’ve heard, the commute time would be about 2.5 hours, so I doubt if anyone would realistically choose to live in Charlottesville and commute to DC on a daily basis. This may serve people who need to be in DC one or two days a week though.

You never know – whenever I put a property on the market in Madison, I will inevitably field calls asking if it is less than 2 hours to X part of NoVa. Some people (in my opinion) are crazy.
