Places 29

Transportation, open space and neighborhood concerns are some of area residents’ top priorities for the master plan for the U.S. 29 corridor in northern Albemarle County….The areas of top public concern for Places29 include pedestrian connections and facilities, preservation of the county’s natural environment, creation of public parks, improvements in the transportation system, protection of existing neighborhoods, provisions for retail services and maintenance of the county’s public facilities, according to the update. From today’s DP.Places 29 has an online questionnaire where residents may provide feedback on the master plan process. What I hope will not be lost is the fact that 29 needs to be an efficient corridor for moving traffic in and out of the area, not merely a commercial zone with several stoplights and roadblocks.

Alternative methods of transportation

It sure seems logical: More space, less congestion. But sometimes things aren’t as simple as they seem, at least to alternative transportation proponents. They are true believers in the “if you build it, they will come” argument. To them, more roads just mean more cars. The Daily Progress has a good story in yesterday’s paper about alternative methods of transportation in our region and some of the challenges we face. Providing clean, efficient, affordable transportation is a challenge for localities that is further complicated in our region by the fact that the City of CVille and the County of Albemarle get along sometimesabout as well as a couple of two year olds.County Board of Supervisors Chairman Dennis S. Rooker said he’d be willing to discuss contributing more money if the county played a greater role in CTS planning and decision making and if the county got credit for federal and state funding secured by the city.“We need to establish a more permanent participation between the city and county,” he said.

Albemarle redistricting moving forward

The constantly-changing nature of school districts is why I rarely if ever definitively answer whether a home will remain in a particular school district – no one really knows. The wheels are in motion to once again realign the Albemarle county school district…. NBC29.The proposal is the second step in the redistricting process, which began with the 16-member redistricting committee turning over its final proposal to Castner in June. The School Board will vote on a final redistricting plan in early fall.Castner proposed moving all 148 students in the Woodbrook district, except the Raintree subdivision, to Jack Jouett Middle instead of Sutherland Middle and then Albemarle High. Eighty-four students from the Willoughby subdivision, Sunset Avenue Extended, Redfields subdivision, Oak Hill subdivision, Sherwood Manor and The Meadows would be moved from Walton Middle to Burley Middle.

Albemarle Places creeps closer

The 80-acre site surrounding the Sperry Marine facility will eventually hold almost 2 million square feet of leasable space and is projected to include a 150-room hotel, a 14-screen cinema, 780 apartments, office space, a grocery store, restaurants and a variety of large retail outlets.Just what we need at one of the busiest, most dangerous intersections in the area. Prior to the land’s rezoning, the county extracted a variety of conditions from developers, who agreed to fund more than $5 million in transportation and capital improvement projects in the area.I didn’t find these proffers/concession at Albemarle’s site; probably wasn’t looking hard enough. If I sound bitter, it is because my office is located between this development and the 29/250 interchange.

Redistricting fallout

The Albemarle County schools redistricting committee is taking criticism from parents and even one of its own members who say the body was unresponsive to residents’ concerns and spent too much time bickering. No kidding – the redistricting process is inefficient and upsets a lot of people? The recommendations, however, are the work of a committee that spent months talking about ways to fill an elementary school that is no longer slated for construction. Southern Urban Elementary, scheduled to open in 2007, was abandoned for the near future after the Capital Improve-ments Plan budget came in $21 million less than anticipated. Should they not have at least contracted on a piece of property prior to planning to build on it?
