THE STORY
A School That Chose to Look Forward
The school at the center of this district has had two names. It opened in 1990 as Paul H. Cale Elementary, named for the longtime Albemarle superintendent, absorbing students from the former Rose Hill Elementary. In 2020, after a review of Cale’s record on integration, the school community — more than 800 students and staff — voted to rename it. They chose Mountain View, for the Blue Ridge ridgelines that, as they put it, unite a range of people across the county.
The district the school serves is southern Albemarle’s growth edge: a band of development-area neighborhoods along Avon Street Extended and the 5th Street corridor — Mill Creek and its neighbors — fading into the more rural southern county, all within minutes of I-64, downtown Charlottesville, and the shops at 5th Street Station.

CHARACTER
What It’s Like to Live Here
Setting: Southern Albemarle’s urban ring — suburban development-area neighborhoods (Mill Creek and its surroundings, the Avon Street and 5th Street corridors) blending into more rural southern county.
Connectivity: Minutes from I-64, downtown Charlottesville, and 5th Street Station (Wegmans and big-box retail). The northern end of the zone is one of the county’s designated growth areas, which is driving much of the enrollment.
The Vibe: Mixed and growing — from townhomes and condos near 5th Street up to larger single-family homes in Mill Creek.
By the Numbers
There were 139 closings in the Mountain View Elementary district in the 12 months ending August 16, 2026, at a median of $515,000 and a range of $185,000 to $1,425,000. Over 24 months: 277 closings, median $507,000. The 12-month median runs about $8,000 above the 24-month figure, a mild uptick that at this sample size reads as a stable market rather than a real trend.
