An Albemarle County panel that’s recommending new school attendance zones has approved a scaled back plan. It would impact roughly 40% fewer kids than a proposal that many parents verbally trashed a week ago. Under this scaled back redistricting scheme, high schoolers whose families live in the Dunlora, Stonehenge, and Pen Park areas off East Rio Road would NOT get switched from Albemarle (archived: 2006) to Monticello (archived: 2011) as of the fall of 2006. Committee Chairman Dean Riddick notes this revised plan would also allow families in the Farmington area to stay in the Murray Elementary (archived: 2007)–Henley Middle School (archived: 2006)–Western Albemarle High School (archived: 2012) feeder pattern.
Superintendent Kevin Castner and his senior staff will examine the ramifications of this modified plan, and could tweak these recommendations before a July 14th meeting of the Albemarle School Board. As always, the County School Board (archived: 2006) has the ultimate responsibility for crafting new attendance zones.
Don’t make any plans yet based on this news. Nothing is final yet … and won’t be until at least the 14 July presentation to the Superintendent.
